The team of leaders who successfully turned around Young Scholars Charter School is seeking highly motivated Instructional Aides for its second turnaround school. After receiving permission from the school district of Philadelphia to take on the important work of turning around Frederick Douglass Elementary School through its Renaissance Schools initiative, the team is proud to announce that Young Scholars Douglass Charter School is now open for the 2010-2011 school year.
This is a unique opportunity to transform a historically low-performing school into a high-quality center of learning that will positively impact students’ lives. The Search Committee seeks energetic and motivated individuals dedicated to transforming a school where at-risk students will flourish academically, socially and emotionally and graduate prepared to succeed at the best high schools and colleges.
The Instructional Aide position will give aspiring teachers the ability to improve their teaching and classroom management skills by learning from competent, experienced teachers in a consistent, school-wide system. The instructional Aide will provide additional support to students with special needs.
Description:
– Will serve as assistant to teachers while being mentored by a veteran teacher in their prospective field (e.g., age group/grade and subject)
– Help teach and create lesson plans and assist in/observe curriculum development
– Help effectively determine specific learning needs of different students
– Manage specific instructional initiatives
– Provide supervision during arrival, dismissal, mealtimes and recess
– Supervise students moving to and from classrooms and other locations in the building
– Will be an integral part of school culture and community
Qualifications:
– Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in a related field
– A genuine desire to develop and perfect one’s instructional competencies abilities
– The ability to work collaboratively with other teachers and administrators
– The strong ability to multi-task and prioritize
– Strong organizational skills
– A firm grasp of curriculum and commitment to our goals of excellent results
– Strong management skills to help ensure an orderly and focused classroom environment
– A desire to learn from others, follow examples, and improve
– A strong desire to work in an urban community
– Commitment to the school turnaround initiative
– Flexibility, a positive attitude, a sense of humor, and a resilient, adventurous spirit!
– Dedication to educating and serving children in all aspects of learning and development
Requirements:
– A bachelor’s degree in education or a related field
– Either has or plans on working towards teacher certification over the course of the program
