Focus on Philadelphia?
Launched in the Fall of 2005, the Interfaith Youth Service Learning Initiative, Walking the Walk: Values in Action, brings together Christian, Jewish and Muslim high school students twice a month throughout the school year to explore the core values of each faith, put these values into action through volunteer service in the community, and reflect upon their experiences through the arts. ?The youth of America?, says Eboo Patel, ?have the ability to make true pluralism a reality.? Patel founded the Chicago Interfaith Youth Core to cultivate a generation of compassionate global leaders. The independent organization brings together young people of all faiths to do service work, reflect on their faith, and better understand the connection between religion and social justice. In 2002, the Utne Reader named Patel one of America?s 30 social visionaries under 30.
A Rhodes Scholar with a Ph.D. in the Sociology of Religion from Oxford University, Patel is a Muslim with a yearning to learn more about all faiths. He lectures worldwide on youth and religion, and was a keynote speaker at the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize Forum.
