Sparkplug Foundation
Posted by on January 5, 2009
The Sparkplug Foundation provides grants up to $5,000 for a variety of nonprofit programs, including music, education and teaching, and grassroots organizing efforts.
Sparkplug makes grants only for seed money, or to launch new ideas within existing projects. The foundation is unable to fund tuition expenses.
Sparkplug funding is intended to build lasting infrastructure for carrying out the goals of music, education and community organizing work. This means the foundation tries to fund projects that build leadership rather than deliver services, and projects that create ongoing work rather than providing one-time opportunities.
Sparkplug gives preference to projects run on small budgets, projects of smallish organizations, and projects that are less likely to receive corporate, institutional or government funding. Along the same lines, the foundation is somewhat less likely to fund university-based projects than other projects.
