Spark the Wave’s Summer of Service 2020

Posted by Spark the Wave on June 30, 2020

Spark the Wave strives to empower, train, and mentor the next generation of leaders who will impact the world through a lifelong commitment to community service. Spark the Wave’s educational programs were first created in 1976 when the American Red Cross of Southeastern Pennsylvania began hosting their annual Leadership Development Center (LDC) to educate young people about the value of citizen service. As LDC and its importance in the community continued to grow, the Red Cross allowed their volunteer team to spin off its operation in January 2004 to facilitate a more comprehensive, year-round approach to reaching young people in Philadelphia and beyond. Spark the Wave was born then and is celebrating its 16th year as a nonprofit this year.

Due to the circumstances surrounding COVID-19, we are disappointed to say that we won’t be able to host Wave Week (our residential summer program) as usual this year, but we are determined to offer an opportunity for young leaders to get involved and give back during this crucial time. We all know our world needs positive change right now in so many ways. STW is more committed than ever to empowering and training the next generation who will tackle the tough issues head-on. Through multiple options this summer, participants will have the chance to earn service hours, make an impact, and become part of a community of like-minded peers who want work to make things better for all of us.

STW is offering two sessions of Ignite Academy (short Zoom sessions mixed with independent volunteer work) – a 5-day training ground for change-makers to plan and execute projects that will meet their community needs – as well as multiple Days of Service participants can attend in small groups. For those who prefer something more independent, the Change-Maker Challenge guide offers dozens of “mini” service projects to do on your own time that make a big impact. Participants interested in getting the best deal, earning the most service hours, and doing the most good should sign up for the Premium Package which offers them a space in  ALL  program options for one price. Participation in these programs looks great on college applications and resumes, and STW will even help you apply for national service awards upon completion.
