Time: Mondays and Wednesdays, 3:00 – 5:00 PM

Southeast by Southeast is seeking volunteers to work after school with English-Language learning refugee students, ages 5-13, from neighborhood schools. Volunteers will assist with overall child supervision as well as academic and enrichment programming.  No language skills necessary.

Started in 2011 by Mural Arts Philadelphia and the Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services, Southeast by Southeast is a supportive community storefront space for immigrant and refugee families that welcomes neighbors, helps new families connect to support systems and has become a focal point for community activities and social services.  A committed force of volunteers, neighbors and artists teach classes on a range of subjects, stretching from sewing and weaving to English as a Second Language.

Key academic skills children need assistance with in Homework Help include: literacy, writing, and daily homework skills, as well as goal-setting, time management, emotional literacy, and positive reinforcement of social skills.

All volunteers must have PA Criminal Background, Child Abuse, and FBI Fingerprints from within the past 5 years.

This program requires a 1x weekly commitment following the academic year for Session 1 (September to December) with an option to continue through Session 2 (January to June).
