Social and Public Innovations: A Look at How Philadelphia and Regional Government Innovates framed within a National Context
“America has never met a problem it couldn’t fix or a challenge it couldn’t meet… But too often we are held back by the very systems that were designed to address these problems… if we are going to emerge from these challenging times … we need to reinvigorate government with the spirit of innovation…” -Michael Bloomberg
On Monday, November 4, 2013, please join us for the Philadelphia Social Innovations Journal (PSIJ) event to launch our fall Journal edition: Social and Public Innovations: A Look at How Philadelphia and Regional Government Innovates framed within a National Context. The primary question this edition asks is not whether government should participate in lifting up those whom prosperity has left behind, but how it should participate . This addition also demonstrates that social change requires a social/public entrepreneur that has the ability to catalyze others to embrace and execute upon change.
It is generally accepted that there are underlying tensions between government and social innovators as government must execute its role in ensuring the democratic values and equity and justice for all while social innovators are driven by finding opportunities within existing problems without always considering the process toward execution. The reality is that innovation requires social innovators and government working together through to manage the political maneuvering process. In recent years Philadelphia government has become known as the hub for social and public innovations, especially in the Education, Social, Medical and Technology sectors. What accounts for the successes (or failures) of these government innovations?
The Social and Public Innovations: A Look at How Philadelphia and Regional Government Innovates within a National Context fall edition and launch event, with the help of local, regional and national experts, will shed a light on how the Philadelphia region is innovating. Specifically this edition and launch will focus on:
- Specific public sector-driven social innovations;
- Social innovation in the context of local social service delivery systems dominated by government dollars and rules;
- How nonprofit and private sector social entrepreneurs and innovators can engage, rather than avoid, government as part of their mandate, vision and theory of change; and
- Leadership Strategies that overcome the stumbling blocks and barriers—whether cultural, political or bureaucratic—that are holding back the progress that social innovation promises.
To take a closer look at how Philadelphia and its regional Government is innovating, the Philadelphia Social Innovations Journal (PSIJ), The City of Philadelphia Office of the Managing Director, and the University of Pennsylvania Fels Institute of Government along with government innovation researchers from Harvard University have joined forces to look at regional government and public innovations.
On Monday, November 4, 2013, from 2-5 PM with a reception to follow from 5-7 PM, businesses, government, nonprofit experts, academics and leading social innovation practitioners will come together at the University of Pennsylvania to share innovations in local and regional government. In reading this edition and attending the launch participants will learn “the secret sauce” of what it takes to innovate and partner in and with government.
Speakers include government and public innovations experts from Harvard University, Philadelphia and regional government, private and public leaders who are leading government innovations in health, human and behavioral services, the budget office, education, arts and culture, and much more.
