The Global Service Institute at Washington University in St. Louis announces the beginning of a Small Research Grants Program on civic service.

For the purposes of this grants program, civic service is defined as "an organized period of substantial engagement and contribution to the local, national, or world community, recognized and valued by society, with minimal monetary compensation to the participant." Civic service is different from occasional volunteering. It refers to organized programs of service, where there is a formal role for the server. The service may be voluntary or compulsory. Service programs can be local, national, international, or transnational in scope. They may be targeted toward servers that are younger, older, of faith, and in school.

GSI will award up to eight (8) research grants with budget amounts ranging from ,000 to ,000 for up to 2 years. Dissertation research proposals with budgets up to US$15,000 will also be considered.

Inquiry letter submissions are due Jan 2 – Feb 15, 2004
