Puentes Hacia el Futuro
2017 Early Childhood Education Program Summer Internship

Description
We seek a highly motivated student in the fields of education, psychology, health, and/or human development to help facilitate our newest education initiative for children 3-5 years of age. The interns will be part of the second iteration of this program in Summer 2017 and, if desired, will be able to continue through the 2017 school year. The Early Childhood Education Internship position provides any student an unparalleled opportunity to work and learn at both the intersection of research, action, and social justice and at the cutting edge of urban education. The interns will engage with issues of education and equality in a community-based, multilingual, and transnational context, preparing them as a future leader and expert in their field.

Early Childhood Education at Puentes de Salud
The purpose of this position is to lead the second iteration of our program in Early Childhood Education in Summer 2017. This program will be part of Puentes de Salud’s education initiative, Puentes Hacia el Futuro. Puentes de Salud serves the rapidly growing Latino immigrant community of South Philadelphia and enhances community wellness through an integrated approach to health, education, and empowerment. Puentes Hacia el Futuro is predicated upon the well-evidenced fact that education is inextricably tied to the health of individuals and communities. Our mission is to improve the educational achievement of children in our immigrant community to improve long-term health outcomes.

Eligibility & Requirements
This internship is available to undergraduate and graduate students with significant relevant experience and qualifications. We are seeking a highly motivated, independent person with excellent interpersonal skills that is passionate about supporting the education, health, and wellness of Latino children. Fluency or proficiency in Spanish desired.

Dates: ​Interns must be available from June 19th – August 11th for orientation, programming, and debrief. Orientation will be 9am-4pm from June 19th – June 23rd. Programming will run 8:30am-1pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays and staff prep from 9am-12pm on Fridays from June 26th – August 11th.

Hours: ​16 hours per week minimum. More hours possible if desired or required by individual/program.

Stipend:​ Puentes de Salud will cover interns’ local (within city) transit.

Puentes Hacia el Futuro
2017 Summer Camp Internship

Description
The Puentes Hacia el Futuro program is offering a six-week summer program to 40-50 ​children who could most benefit from extra support in enhancing their bilingual literacy. We are seeking a group of interns who will facilitate interactive sessions. Interns will have a significant amount of leadership and teamwork responsibility and thus are expected to be highly motivated. The interns will be responsible for the daily functioning of the program by leading educational, cultural, and activities and lessons for the children. The interns will work closely with educators and leaders in the Puentes organization and gain an understanding of the social determinants of health and social justice issues impacting our community. This is a special opportunity to learn about and to practice the process of development and implementation of an education and public health initiative.

About Puentes Hacia el Futuro
Puentes Hacia el Futuro, Puentes de Salud’s education and wellness program, is predicated upon the well-evidenced fact that education is inextricably tied to the health of individuals and communities. The children of South Philadelphia’s Latino community come from a rich background of bicultural and bilingual heritage but also confront significant academic, cultural, and social challenges as they begin their primary education in the Philadelphia public school system. The mission of Puentes Hacia el Futuro is to improve the educational achievement of children in the South Philadelphia Latino immigrant community in order to improve long-term health outcomes, as well as to provide support in the context of extremely limited educational resources.

Responsibilities include:
● Commit to provide tutoring/mentoring and organizational support for 35 hours​ per week for seven​-weeks. Candidates must be available for the entire duration of the program.
● Facilitation of activities and lessons for daily sessions.
● Provide guidance and support to children and other interns.
● Build relationships and work with parents, family members, and external resources to enhance children’s educational experience.

Eligibility & Requirements
This internship is available for a college student or recent college graduate. We are seeking a highly motivated person with excellent interpersonal skills to join an enthusiastic group that is passionate about supporting the education, health and wellness of the children in this community. Fluency or proficiency in Spanish and relevant, previous experience working with children is required.

Dates:​ July 5th – August 18th, 2017 (Orientation: July 5th-7th, & 10th, 9am-4pm)
Weekly Schedule:​ July 11th-August 18th, Monday – Friday 9am – 4pm (Thursday field trip times vary)
