Tired of irresponsible corporations dumping toxics in your town? Looking to protect a local wilderness area? Whether you’re just getting involved or looking to hone your skills as an organizer, the Sierra Student Coalition’s (SSC) summer trainings are for you!

Organizing is a skill like any other and it can be learned (and taught). We spend 7 days living rustically learning skills, discussing the issues, eating great veggie and vegan food, and of course having a fine old time with some of the coolest folks on the planet.

This year we’re putting on 1 college program and 1 high school program in the Mid-Atlantic region:

– Pennsylvania College Program, May 16-23: Kamp Kirkwood near Philadelpia, PA
– Virginia High School Program, July 5-12: Prince William Forest Park in Triangle, VA

Register Online! All programs are limited to 30 participants, so register today! Visit

The cost of the high school program is $165, and the college program is $78. If you’re not a Sierra Club member, you’ll need to join (either at the training or online). You can pay with a credit card through our secure system, or mail a check payable to ‘Sierra Student Coalition’ to: 408 C Street NE, Washington, DC 20002. Money concerns should not be a reason not to apply. If you’d like to apply for a need-based fee waiver, please call Erika Park in SSC Headquarters, 1-888-JOIN-SSC.

Registration Deadline: All registrations are due no later than June 1. For the PA college program, registrations are due May 1.

What do we cover?

-Organizing 101: How to start and run an effective organization. We cover everything from recruiting folks for the first meeting, to running a meeting, to developing new leaders to ensure that your organization persists from year to year.

-Communication Skills: How to say what you mean, with confidence and persuasion – be it to the media, to fellow group members, or the public.

-Campaign Organizing: How to plan, implement, and run an effective environmental campaign. We teach the most essential skills needed to effect real social and environmental change.

-Environmental Issues: Once you have the skills, we help you find an issue you would like to use them for – public lands, global warming, human rights and the environment, you name it.

Of course, the program isn’t all work and no play, no ma’am! The week is filled with hikes, energizing (and often goofy) nighttime activities, good veggie and vegan food, and (as we said before) some of the coolest folks on Earth.
