Fund Raising Event
For What?
Our Simon Gratz High CommuniTech Club, CTC, students are traveling to Jamaica June 18 ? 28, 2005, to complete a service-learning project. Our CTC students are going to set up approximately 50 donated computers in 12 Basic schools in the St. Thomas Parish, which is near Kingston. Over the ten-day period, CTC students will then use those computers to teach 30 Jamaican educators and 30 Jamaican high school students how to refurbish, maintain and repair those computers. In addition, the ?trainees? will receive a manual that recaps the training and that can be shared with others. Those ?trainees? will then use the manual to teach others as well as to maintain the donated computers. Educators, students and community members throughout the Parish will benefit, as will our CTC students.
The program will sustain itself through the years; there will be a continual flow of ?new? trainers and more donated computers through the non-profit Edu-Tourism, which is sponsoring the CTC trip to Jamaica. Throughout the year, Edu-Tourism brings groups of students and other people interested in combining travel with community service to the area to complete service-learning projects. Project participants stay in the Edu-Tourism?s, Center for Global Understanding located in the St. Thomas Parish.
The Simon Gratz CommuniTech Club was originally developed in 2000 by Edison Freire and the Pennsylvania Service-Learning Alliance and is supported by a grant from Corporation for National and Community Service. CTC strives to bridge the ?digital divide? through encouraging students to use technology to solve community problems. Participating students learn such skills as computer hardware repair, software installation, and productivity application use. They apply these skills to design and implement technology-driven service-learning projects.
