Service-Learning – ON LINE COURSE

Summer Session #2

In this graduate level Service Learning course, students will actively explore and research the essential elements of community based service-learning and the wider field of experiential education. Students will research best practice models of  community based service-learning.   The course will explore service-learning in a variety of settings including schools and institutions of Higher Education.  Participants will be encouraged to develop their own research questions about service-learning and to begin to answer those questions through active research.  The course is taught by Cynthia Belliveau, Ph.D. the former Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Service Learning Alliance and Pennsylvania Alliance for Character Education.  Contact Cynthia Belliveau at [email protected], or  215 204-4397 for additional information.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
1.     To examine the theoretical, historical, practical, and political aspects of service learning.
2.      To learn how service learning, community based learning, character education, civic engagement, experiential learning and academic achievement can integrate for impact in today’s schools and higher education institutions.
3.    To thoughtfully consider and explore Temple University’s connections to the community and what initiatives can support Temple to be a truly engaged university with a wide range of community based service-learning opportunities.
4.     To explore social and civic responsibility within classroom and institutional settings.
5.     To assess and strengthen self-awareness and personal skills related to service and leadership.
6.      To critically consider the current research on service-learning and the implications of the research on the field.
7.      To develop research questions to personally explore through the course semester through interviews, readings, research and classroom discussions.

This course is one of the strongly recommended courses for Master’s students in the school-community partnership track and the Certificate of Learning in Urban Education (CLUE).
