Service Learning: A Strategy for Keeping Youth in School
Posted by on October 20, 2008
Space is limited!! A reminder that registration is now open for the Fall Institute Service Learning: A Strategy for Keeping Youth in School, hosted by the Institute for Global Education and Service Learning.
Workshops will include the following: Introduction to Service Learning Principles of Effective Practice; Using research to Understand the Dropout Crisis; Service Learning as a Dropout Prevention Strategy; Going Deeper into Service Learning Themes (choose two of four focus areas); Funding Panel Discussion.
Every 29 seconds a student in America gives up on school, that means more than 1 million students are dropping out EACH year!
Many youth, who remain in schools across the country, are still at risk and unlikely to graduate on schedule with both the skills and the self-esteem necessary to exercise meaningful options in the areas of work, leisure, culture, civic affairs, and inter/intrapersonal relationships. (not sure about the graduation rate in your state or district? visit: http://mapsg.edweek.org/edweekv2/default.jsp)
Service learning is a teaching strategy that can help!
Recognized by the National Dropout Prevention Center as one of 15 Effective Strategies, Service Learning meets the critical needs of youth at risk by promoting positive youth development while increasing academic achievement and improving community connections.
You Can Change the Lives of Youth…
Participate in this three day Institute that will reinforce principles of high quality effective service learning, help educators understand the dropout crisis, explore how service learning promotes positive youth development and prevents dropouts, and allow participants to choose a model of service learning to investigate.
Make plans to join us and our exciting team of youth facilitators for this stimulating institute.
Bring Teams of teachers, school administrators, community based staff, AmeriCorps members and anyone interested in helping keep youth in school.
