Seeking Volunteer Tutors for New Immigrants, The Welcoming Center

The Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians, founded in 2003, is a nonprofit organization that promotes immigrant participation in the Philadelphia region’s economic, political, and social life. Our Global Works Training Center offers classes that help immigrant and American-born individuals participate more effectively in the local economy. We offer classes in ESOL, Civics/Citizenship, and Adult Basic Education including GED preparation.
The center is seeking volunteer tutors to work with our students. Volunteers are an important component of our instructional team, and we are always looking for people who are motivated to serve while working in an environment that offers them training and professional development opportunities.

Classes Offered*
• Vocational Literacy (Job Readiness), English as a Second Language, Citizenship and Civics, GED, Literacy
* All of our classes learn English language skills contextualized for a particular subject or topic. Our approach to English language learning aims to give our students the language and resources to use in their daily personal and work life.

• M/W/F 9:00-12:00
• M/W/F 1:00-4:00
• T/Th 9:00-12:00

• M/W 6:00-9:00 PM
• T/Th 6:00-9:00 PM (Norris Square)
• M/W 12:00-3:00 (Olney Library)
Tutoring Activities and Expectations
• Assist teacher in the classroom or work one-on-one with students that require extra help
• Study with a student to pass the Naturalization Exam to become a citizen
• Help a student write their resume
• Practice for a job interview
• Administrative duties such as photocopying and making classroom aids such as flashcards
• Minimum of one semester commitment
• Attend all class sessions and training activities
• Professional behavior and sense of responsibility
• Cultural sensitivity to a wide range of life experiences
