National Literacy Action Week
“Awareness to Action: Literacy through a Multicultural Lens”
January 30th-February 5th 2012
What is NLAW?
Throughout its history, SCALE has supported the activist initiatives of campus-based literacy programs across the country. NLAW is our most prominent organizing initiative for strengthening literacy activism. This year, NLAW will take place from January 30th through February 5th, 2012.
National Literacy Action Week (NLAW) is a nationwide event where campus literacy programs join together to raise awareness about literacy and create change on their campuses and in their communities.
How can my organization participate in NLAW?
To participate in National Literacy Action Week, your organization will need to plan three advocacy, activist, and awareness-raising literacy activities on your campus.
What are some examples of different types of activities my organization can plan?
Campus activities can take many forms. Your organization might:
Plan a read-a-thon on campus
Post facts about literacy or illiteracy issues to your organization’s Facebook page, Twitter, or around campus
Read social justice or advocacy books to students that your organization tutors
Host banned-books readings on campus
Set up information tables around campus to inform your campus about current literacy issues
