State losing ground on key school readiness measures
Pennsylvania Partnerships for Children has issued a report which shows that Pennsylvania lost ground on six of 16 school readiness measures.
School Readiness in Pennsylvania — 2010 found that 40 percent of Pennsylvania children live in low-income families. A growing number of children lack health insurance and access to child care subsidy, and availability of public prekindergarten is shrinking.
And despite universal health coverage for all Pennsylvania children, the rate of children ages birth through 4 without insurance climbed to 4.6 percent, up from 3.9 percent in 2009.
All areas are essential to children’s readiness for school and academic success. However, some areas showed improvement, including the rates of children with access to high quality child care and those attending full-day kindergartens.
Pennsylvania lost ground on third-grade reading scores but progressed in third-grade math. Download the full report here.
