Scaling Reading Success

Posted by AARP Foundation on October 19, 2015

AARP Foundation received a 2015 Social Innovation Fund Classic grant and has released an RFP targeting 19 states (highlighted below). AARP Foundation’s SIF funding will seek to evaluate and expand “Scaling Reading Success,” which is an Experience Corps model designed to utilize small group tutoring (three to four children) and/or small group plus classroom-wide assistance to help struggling students in high need communities catch up to grade level in reading.

AARP Foundation will use a competitive grant program to identify at least seven sites with high proportions of students who are struggling to read, representing 28 schools and 4,000 children. The program will work with an independent evaluator to investigate the effectiveness and efficiency of the “Scaling Reading Success” model, with the goal of expanding the impact and reach of the program to even larger numbers of children and schools.

AARP Foundation is soliciting interest from potential subgrantees that have existing relationships with schools/districts where they plan to implement the program.

Eligible states include: Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.
