The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia, a non-profit advocacy and education organization, manages the youth education program Safe Routes Philly (SRP) that introduces cycling and walking as fun, healthy and environmentally friendly activities for all children to enjoy. Since its inception in 2010, SRP has trained over 200 teachers and our pedestrian and bicycle safety lessons have been taught in 132 public and charter schools, reaching 60,000 students. SRP has assisted 18 schools with walkability audits, facilitated the installation of 253 bike racks at 45 public schools, and continues to work with schools to implement encouragement activities, such as bike rodeos, walk to school days, and bike to school days. SRP was recently awarded the 21st Century grant from NBC10 to expand Walking School Bus programs in Philadelphia. The Safe Routes Philly Coordinator will be responsible for continuing this successful program by fulfilling our goals for two City of Philadelphia funding contracts, as well as expanding Walking School Buses.

The Safe Routes Philly Community Liaison reports to the Director of Education.

The SRP Community Rep will:
 Work out of the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia office
 Visit schools across Philadelphia via bicycle or public transportation to provide program support
 Occasionally work outdoors and on weekends and evenings

The Safe Routes Philly Coordinator will:
 Train educators on delivering Safe Routes Philly Curriculum.
 Act as primary point of contact and professional resource for school contacts.
 Follow up with school contacts on a regular basis to offer encouragement to teach SRP lessons.
 Assist schools with establishing programs that encourage children, parents, and teachers to walk and bike to school safely and on a regular basis.
 Conduct community walkability audits with schools near high crash zones.
 Work with middle school wellness councils to provide support for walking and biking initiatives and traffic safety lessons.
 Collect and enter all school data including lessons, encouragement activities, surveys, applications, and more in the Salesforce database.
 Provide walking and bicycling information at festivals and health fairs.
 Build strategic partnerships with community organizations, police departments, volunteers, sponsors, and other city organizations.
 Recruit and supervise volunteers and college interns to assist with SRP programming.
 Train and supervise Walking School Bus coordinators and route leaders.

The candidate should have the following qualifications:
 Ability to communicate effectively with people of all ages, abilities, cultural groups, economic status or sexual orientation.
 Ability to be persistent, professional and creative when marketing and selling SRP / Walking School Bus program.
 Ability to write and speak in a professional, friendly and accurate manner.
 Ability to stay calm and collected in challenging situations.
 Comfortable presenting information to and engaging large groups of children, teens and adults with humor and enthusiasm.
 Problem solving skills, creativity, flexibility and self-motivation.
 Passion for active modes of transportation and motivation to share that passion with others.
 Willingness to visit any Philadelphia neighborhood on foot, bicycle or by public transit.
 A professional appearance and manner at schools, community events and the office.
 Experience working with children.
 Experience bicycling, walking or using public transportation in Philadelphia.
 Commitment to following traffic safety laws and using all appropriate safety gear including helmets, reflective material, etc.
 Punctuality and attendance.
 Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
 Can pass a background check.

We prefer candidates with these qualifications:
 College graduate with previous work experience.
 Fluency in a language other than English, especially Spanish.
 Experience with school and school district administration (PHL School District a plus).
 Experience in coaching, sales and/or community organizing.
 Experience with Salesforce database.
 Familiarity with the city of Philadelphia and its layout.
