Russell Sage Foundation Seeks Applications for Intergenerational Mobility Research Projects
DEADLINE: MARCH 28, 2014

One of the oldest foundations in the United States, the Russell Sage Foundation was established by Margaret Olivia Sage in 1907 for “the improvement of social and living conditions in the United States.” In pursuit of that mission, the foundation now dedicates itself to strengthening the methods, data, knowledge, and theoretical core of the social sciences as a means of diagnosing social problems and improving social policies.

The foundation is seeking applications for research projects that deepen  understanding of intergenerational mobility in the U.S. by using recently released statistics on mobility from the Equality of Opportunity Project.

Applicants from any of the social sciences are encouraged to submit a proposal utilizing this new data resource (possibly in combination with other data sources). Examples of the types of research topics of interest include poverty traps, downward mobility, country-level analysis, income security, and border effects, as well as other correlates of mobility. Applicants are encouraged to incorporate additional quantitative or qualitative data sources in pursuing their hypotheses.

Grants of up to $20,000 will be awarded for a faculty project (junior or senior) and up to $7,000 for a graduate student project. Applications may be submitted by teams of researchers. The maximum funding for a faculty project will be $20,000. If a graduate student project has multiple students, the foundation will consider funding it up to $14,000. Funds will not be provided for travel to  conferences or for doctoral student tuition. No overhead or indirect costs will be provided through these  grants.

Research from accepted proposals will be presented at a one-day academic conference at the Russell Sage Foundation in April or May 2015. The aim of the conference will be  on improving the quality of the research and  fostering collaboration among young researchers interested in intergenerational mobility. Grantees will be free to publish their research in the outlet of their choice. The foundation will reimburse participants for reasonable travel expenses.
