Roots to Re-Entry Project Coordinator

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s (PHS) Roots to Re-Entry Job Training and Placement Program gives inmates at the Philadelphia Prison System (PPS) a chance to develop new skills, gain hands-on landscaping and horticultural experience, and pursue meaningful employment upon their release. PHS is currently seeking an ambitious individual with strong landscape, and horticultural, as well as strong managerial and organizational skills.  The Project Coordinator is responsible for supporting the Program Director by effectively applying lessons taught in class to hands-on training. The individual reports directly to the Program Director.   Successful applicants must be able to take direction, work with minimal supervision and be reliable and hard working. This is a full time (40hrs./weekly), seasonal, temporary position starting January 6, 2014 and ending  June 27, 2014 (possible renewal based on funding).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Take classroom lessons and apply them to onsite landscape projects and work
• Teach multiple aspects of landscape management and horticultural techniques
•  Oversee purchases related to program in accordance to budget
• Anticipate any materials that may be needed for projects
• Monitor each participant through evaluations and progress forms
• Communicate program needs and issues to Director
• Communicate participant progress with staff overseeing participant support services
• Oversee the maintenance and operations of training site
• Coordinate with Director to schedule trainings and onsite job interviews with participants
• Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
• Ability to facilitate 15-20 participants effectively
• Good verbal and written communication skills; and time management
• Ability to understand and anticipate the needs of participants and prison staff
• Experience in operation and maintenance of power equipment and hand held tools used in the landscape industry, including but not limited to commercial mowers, line trimmers, and gas blowers.
• Supervisory experience in the landscaping industry. Background in estate management a plus.
• Education, social work, and reentry experience a plus
• Valid PA Drivers License and clean, safe driving record
