Rodale Institute Shumei Natural Agriculture Intern Program 2010

The NA interns will help to maintain two demonstration gardens, and assist with our plant sales and workshops. They will have the opportunity to work with Rodale Institute researchers, educators and inter act with the many visitors that are interested in learning sustainable gardening practices.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Greenhouse Work:  Commercial Greenhouse and Geodesic Dome: seed, water, transplant

Gardens: Establish raised beds, plant, water, insect management, harvest, seed saving

Garden Maintenance: Weed, mow, apply mulch

Participate in Workshops, Plant Sale, Valley Youth Program, RI Events

Qualifications:
Dependable and willing to commit to the 6 month program
A degree in agriculture or environmental related major helpful
Previous gardening experience required
Ability to perform tasks of a physical nature and to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions (heat, humidity, cold)
Excellent verbal presentation skills
Ability to work well in a team environment, as well as independently
Mature and responsible work attitude, as well as reliable organized work habits

Skills an intern can learn:
Principles of Natural Agriculture food production: Continuous cropping, seed saving, preventive insect management

Organic Gardening principles: making compost, green manures, crop rotations, insect management

Herbs: Culinary, Medicinal and Ornamental

Greenhouse Management

Pay: $10/hr.
