A child health research group at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia is seeking a talented and resourceful research assistant. The successful candidate will participate in a rapidly growing, dynamic research unit devoted to transforming the health and well-being of children by increasing current understanding of the mechanisms through which significant childhood adversity translate into adverse outcomes throughout the life course and improving the quality of children’s healthcare by developing and testing approaches to trauma informed pediatric practice. Our research portfolio includes projects that are engaged in developing measures of childhood adversity from the perspectives of children themselves, and observational studies on how significant adversity changes children’s health over time in addition to studies investigating the underlying biological mechanisms through which childhood adversity impact lifelong health. Our work is funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Stoneleigh Foundation.
The research assistant position is a paid part-time position that will support work developing and testing approaches to incorporating trauma-informed practice into pediatric care as well as studies investigating mechanisms through which childhood adversity impacts health throughout the life course. The research assistant will support project activities directed at creating a youth-informed childhood adversity measure and assisting local health and social service agencies in incorporating this measure into current practice. In addition, the research assistant will support activities towards the completion of observational studies investigating the underlying mechanisms through which childhood adversity influences health. In completing these tasks, the individual will be responsible for providing direct support to partner agencies and will play a major role in the completion of the research project activities across multiple sites. In this position, the individual will assist the study team and project research coordinator in coordinating research activities at partner sites; maintaining the tracking system for documenting project progress; providing basic technical and administrative support to partner organizations; engaging a broad range of project stakeholders; organizing staff research meetings; assisting in the preparation of project deliverables including progress reports, final reports and papers for scientific publications; conducting literature searches and synthesizing research evidence; helping prepare and maintain Institutional Review Board applications and protocols; and enrolling and interviewing study participants.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
• At least a high school graduate, currently enrolled in post secondary institution
• Strong organizational and project management skills; experience coordinating work focused on quality improvement or implementation is highly desirable
• Ability to establish goals, structures, and processes necessary to implement and complete multiple projects and tasks.
• Strategic and analytical thinking skills with an ability to solve problems and make decisions.
• Ability to prioritize ongoing and new projects, as well as conduct research and gather information.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
• Excellent organizational skills and detail/deadline-oriented. Strong initiative and follow-through.
• Ability to multi-task as well as to prioritize multiple projects and quickly change direction and focus.
• Ability to interact well with all levels and types of staff and organizations and engage external partners in a professional manner.
• Superior communications skills (phone, written, verbal, grammar, interpersonal) with high level of diplomacy, judgment and discretion.
• Possess strong writing skills with exceptional attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Proficiency in all MS Office applications, email, databases, web research and ability to trouble shoot computer-related problems as well as other administrative experience and competence.
• Must be able to work independently and as part of the team.
• An interest in child health research
Frequently requires sitting, standing or walking for long periods. Occasionally requires bending, crouching or kneeling. Requires use of hands, keyboarding, fine motor skills, occasionally lifting up to twenty pounds, occasionally moving objects up to 100 pounds.
