Philadelphia Millennials are emerging as a powerful economic and civic force fueling the city’s growth. In a recent State of the City report, PEW found that the number of young people in Philadelphia grew significantly, increasing by tens of thousands since 2006. Urban analysts also pointed out how crucial attracting talented young adults is to the city’s economic growth. Nationally, jobs are becoming less place-based and Philadelphia struggles with job creation, requiring the city to evaluate quality of life measures. In addition, despite there being over 60 higher education institutions in the Philadelphia region, educational attainment continues to be a challenge as the city ranks 22nd in the number of college graduates among the country’s 25 largest cities. However, the percentage of 25 to 34 year olds with postsecondary credentials is six points higher than the national average at 37.5%, which lends insight into the role Millennials will play in regenerating the economy. As the city continues to attract highly educated young professionals as well as work to retain Philadelphia natives, the question remains – how can Millennials play a more active role in shaping the city’s economic and civic life?
Mobilize.org’s three-day, summit engagement process leverages the unique characteristics of the Millennial Generation – collaboration, diversity, technological savvy and an entrepreneurial spirit – to ensure that this generation has equal access to actively participate in our democracy, and the skills, resources, relationships and support necessary to work, both individually and collectively to move our communities and our country forward.
