Dear Friends of the UCCP’s Temple Youth VOICES Project-

We are reaching out to our friends and partners to ask for your support in spreading the word about VOICES!

We will be hosting our annual Recruitment and Orientation Session for new participants on THURSDAY, October 2nd at Temple University from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. (in Ritter Hall, Walk Auditorium, 13th and Montgomery Streets).  This informative and interactive event is designed to give young people a taste of what it means to work towards creating positive social change within the VOICES framework.

Below is the general letter that introduces the Temple Youth VOICES Project to anyone who might not be familiar it.

If you are interested in obtaining copies of the flier and/or scheduling a smaller recruitment workshop in your community or at your organization, please contact Ieshia Nelson at 215.204.3871 or inelson@temple.edu.  The UCCP is proud and excited to welcome Ieshia to our staff.  A former member of the UCCP’s Leaders Corps, she is our new (and fabulous!) Temple Youth VOICES Project Coordinator.

Dear Fellow Philadelphian-

We are writing to introduce you to The Temple Youth VOICES Project, the centerpiece of the University Community Collaborative of Philadelphia’s youth civic engagement and leadership development initiative.

VOICES seeks to build the individual and collective power of youth through collaborative research, education, and relationship building with community partners, non-profit organizations and government agencies. Integrating youth media, youth leadership development and youth organizing activities in community and university-based settings, VOICES helps develop the academic, technical and interpersonal skills of participants, connect them to their communities, and provide them with the knowledge and education necessary to make positive choices in their lives and meaningful change in their communities.

From October until May, VOICES participants meet two afternoons per week from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Temple’s campus and one Saturday per month for special activities.  We are currently recruiting 45 new youth to become part of our 2008-09 Temple Youth VOICES cohort.  If you, or someone you know, is interested in learning more about VOICES, we encourage you to attend our Orientation and Information Session on Thursday, October 2nd at 4:30 in Ritter Hall, Walk Auditorium.

In the meantime, if you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Ieshia Nelson, Temple Youth VOICES Project Coordinator at 215.204.3871 or inelson@temple.edu.

To get a feel for the UCCP, please check out our website at http://www.temple.edu/uccp and to meet some current youth leaders involved in VOICES, go to http://www.myspace.com/VOICESPOWER.

We look forward to meeting you!
