We often talk about the racial achievement gap in literacy as if it’s a single problem with a single solution. Researcher Munro Richardson is here to reframe that narrative.
With a fresh analysis of data, he’ll show how the gap for Black, Hispanic, and Native American children is actually two distinct challenges stacked on top of each other: a short-term bottleneck in foundational, “constrained” skills and a much larger, longer-lasting divide in “unconstrained” skills like executive function, vocabulary and background knowledge.
This session will challenge how you think about what a “reading skill” even is, why many of our usual interventions fall short, and why schools can’t solve the literacy crisis alone. Whether you’re an educator, policymaker, or community leader, you’ll leave with fresh insights and sharper language for driving meaningful change in your community.
