Breaking Down Walls: Reaching Youth at Risk Through the ARTS
PREVENTION, HEALTH & WELLNESS
October 27 & 28th 2005
Conference to be held at:
Rutgers University
Busch Campus Student Center
Piscataway, NJ
As a strategy in Health and Wellness II
A Focus on Community Health, Workforce development, and Technology
Youths at risk for alcohol/drug abuse and its related social and health problems usually present with multiple risk factors, have poor communication skills, unexpressed anger, and mistrust adults. The arts can transform the lives of youth at risk of negative behaviors by increasing the protective factors which can lie silent within.
The aim of the arts approach is to develop resiliency by increasing youth’s emotional, behaviorial, cognitive, and cultural competencies. The arts provide options, challenges, and an effective means for promoting change.
Prevention education has generally used an ‘outside in’ approach to learning, the arts use an ‘inside out’ approach.
