Monument Lab invites applications for Re:Generation initiative
Founded by Paul Farber and Ken Lum in 2012, Monument Lab is a nonprofit public art and history studio that works with artists, students, educators, activists, municipal agencies, and cultural institutions on participatory approaches to public engagement and collective memory, cultivating and facilitating critical conversations around the past, present, and future of monuments.
Thanks to the generous support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Monument Lab invites applications for its Re: Generation initiative, which supports teams of two or more individuals working together to create a new or expand an existing public-facing project, with each selected team receiving a total of $100,000 in unrestricted funding towards their commemorative campaign or project.
For the 2024 round of Re: Generation, the organization emphasizes selecting projects with creative representation and interpretation of erased, suppressed, or threatened stories and histories. Applications for projects that have the potential to shift local and regional narratives, particularly in contexts where interventions into the commemorative landscape could foster wider transformations, are especially encouraged. Preference will be given to teams operating in states that have passed legislation limiting the teaching of accurate and diverse American history.
Selected teams will collaborate across Re: Generation sites, meeting as a cohort virtually and in person over the 2024 calendar year, presenting projects synchronously in fall 2024, and coordinating with Monument Lab on a broader public engagement campaign.
Monument Lab is hosting an informational webinar on September 15, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. ET. Initial applications, consisting of basic contact information and a 500 to 1,500-word essay about the proposed project, are due October 2, 2023. Upon review, teams selected to move forward after staff review will be asked for more information to round out the jury review in November.
For complete program guidelines, application instructions, and information about previously supported projects, see the Monument Lab website.
Deadline: October 2, 2023 (Initial applications)
