Purpose Driven Teaching & Learning: A Workshop for Educators – Jan 9
Posted by PHENND on January 6, 2026
This day-long workshop on Friday, January 9, 2026, 9:00am to 4:30pm at Holy Family University, explores how teaching with a clear, meaningful purpose can transform student learning. Purpose-driven learning—relevant to students and today’s world—calls for complex thinking and the integration of multiple disciplines. This is the core of transdisciplinary learning.
Through interactive activities, we will show how a purpose-driven, transdisciplinary approach can shape curriculum and course design. Participants will collaborate in multidisciplinary teams to begin creating learning activities that could either stand alone in traditional courses or form the basis of new transdisciplinary courses.
We will conclude with a group discussion on practical next steps—how instructors can bring more purpose into their teaching, and how administrators can support meaningful learning that benefits both students and the wider community.
Participants will receive breakfast, lunch, planning materials and a copy of New Era, New Urgency: The Case for Repurposing Education by F. Joseph Merlino and Deborah Pomeroy.
Workshop Facilitators:
- F. Joseph Merlino
- Dr. Laurie Mauger
