July 7- August 22, 2014

About Puentes Hacia El Futuro
Puentes Hacia El Futuro, an educational enrichment program, is an important component of Puentes de Salud’s mission to improve the health and wellness of the Latino immigrant community of South Philadelphia. (http://www.puentesdesalud.org). The children of South Philadelphia’s Latino community confront daunting challenges of academic, cultural and social assimilation as they begin their primary education in the Philadelphia public school system. The mission of Puentes Hacia El Futuro is to promote the health and wellness of the Latino immigrant community of South Philadelphia by addressing pressing educational needs. Specifically, we aim to improve the educational achievement, literacy, and self-esteem of the students we serve by providing tutoring, mentoring, and support services for children and families.

Internship Description
The Puentes Hacia El Futuro program is offering a six-week summer program to 30 of our students who need extra support in reaching grade level reading, writing and math skills. We are seeking a group of interns who will oversee and run the summer program. Interns will have a significant amount of autonomy and leadership responsibility, and thus are expected to be highly motivated and independent. The interns will be responsible for the daily functioning of the program, as well as developing educational, cultural, and health-related activities and lessons for the children. The intern will work closely with health care professionals, educators, and leaders in the Puentes organization, and gain an understanding of the social determinants of health impacting our community. This is a special opportunity to learn about and practice the process of development and implementation of a public health initiative. The program will take place Monday-Thursday from 9 AM to 3 PM.

Responsibilities include:
• Commit to provide tutoring/mentoring and organizational support a minimum of 24 hours per week for six weeks, with an optional additional 8 hours for field trips on Fridays.
• Design, preparation, and facilitation of activities and lessons for daily sessions.
• Design and promote positive health and wellness educational activities.
• Provide guidance and support to other volunteers.
• Build relationships and work with parents, family members, and external resources to enhance children’s educational experience.
• Work with the Puentes leadership team (coordinators, health care professionals, teachers, and community health workers) to support the healthy development of students.

This is an unpaid internship.

This internship is available for a college student or recent college graduate. We are seeking a highly motivated, independent person with excellent interpersonal skills to join an enthusiastic group that is passionate about supporting the education, health and wellness of the children in this community. Fluency in Spanish is required. It is important for the intern to have a strong interest in building relationships with the children and families with whom we work.
