Neighborhoods:
Wissinoming, Tacony, Mayfair, Holmesburg, Upper Holmesburg, East Torresdale, and the Delaware riverfront from the old Frankford Creek to the Bucks County border.
The North Delaware district is comprised of dense rowhouse neighborhoods south of Cottman Ave., and a more varied housing stock to the north. Frankford Ave. and Torresdale Ave. are important shopping areas, well served by buses and trolleys. I-95 and the main Philly-to-New York rail corridor traverse the district in a wide transportation corridor. Another major feature is the mouth of the Pennypack Creek where a large riverfront park sits adjacent to the City’s complex of prisons and a water treatment plant. The district includes four miles of Delaware riverfront where underutilized industrial land should be redeveloped for a mix of activities such as clean and green industry, new housing, parks and marinas. The planned North Delaware Greenway riverfront trail should be implemented with “green connector streets” linking to the neighborhoods. The four commuter rail stations between Bridesburg and Torresdale are planned for station upgrades and transit-oriented development. Historic preservation is an issue because the district has many historic properties in residential and industrial areas. Other issues include neighborhood commercial revitalization and mitigating I-95 reconstruction activities.
