Pt-time Early Childhood Education Specialist, Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center

Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center is seeking an early childhood education specialist for a part-time independent contracted position to lead the “The Watershed is an Open Book” program, a series of seasonally-themed family workshops designed to build reading readiness in 3 to 8-year olds and their parent/caregiver using water and the watershed as its context. The program will take place weekly in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood and the Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center.

The education specialist is expected to creatively integrate watershed understanding into weekly activities and take-home materials for families, develop and implement recruitment strategies and coordinate food and materials for each session.

Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center has an existing framework that the education specialist may adapt and modify or may create new ones. The program, now in Year 2, is supported by the William Penn Foundation and is part of a 2-year pilot of their Informal Learning Initiative.

Hours and Experience:

Hours will include leading the weekly 1.5 hour program (after school and/or Saturdays) and monthly Field trips to Fairmount Water Works Interpretive Center as well as independent planning and prep time, ongoing recruitment and retention of families;

This is an 8-month contracted position from January 1 through August 31, 2019. The schedule for the Winter/Spring series may be different than the summer series.

Skills and background:

• Master’s Degree and/or experience in early childhood and elementary education;

• Literacy and language arts specialist encouraged to apply;

• Environmental education and/or outdoor education experience required;

• Knowledge of the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood community a plus.
