The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has been a visionary not-for-profit organization in the Greater Philadelphia Region since its founding in 1827. PHS organizes the annual Philadelphia International Flower Show, the world’s largest and longest-running indoor flower show, which brings 250,000 visitors and creates a $61 million economic impact to the city. PHS’s Philadelphia Green helps transform lives through revolutionary programs like City Harvest, which has grown and donated 64,300 lbs of fresh produce in three years—helping to feed 1,000 families each week of the growing season. PHS will also help lead the new Plant One Million, an ambitious program to plant one million trees in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

Mission: The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society motivates people to improve the quality of life and create a sense of community through horticulture.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Helps to motivate and organize community groups through greening and sustainability initiatives. Works with PHS’ Philadelphia Green and Education Departments on a wide range of civic engagement and educational projects. Coordinates community outreach and neighborhood-based organizing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Works closely with project team and outside community and partners to collaboratively develop, implement and support new and existing community greening and stormwater management projects.

Helps to facilitate and promote public engagement for community planning projects, including some small and medium sized event management.

Provides hands-on assistance with community education, including workshops and trainings.

Assists the citywide team in developing project schedules, timelines, budget and maintains project-related documentation.

Performs other work-related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

High School Diploma required, Associates or Bachelor degree in related field preferred.

Experience with community service and skilled in working with diverse communities. Must be approachable, motivated, out-going and “people-oriented.” Patience, energy, and an ability to listen are essential.

Ability to work collaboratively with varied constituencies, including city government, non profits, community groups and other civic partners. Familiar with best practices in community organizing and civic engagement.

Basic writing skills required

Proficient in Microsoft Office suite and Windows 10

Skilled in use of online social media

Valid Drivers license

Detail oriented
Independent and collaborative work style
Good organizational skills
Working knowledge of urban horticulture preferred
Knowledge of Spanish language a plus
Knowledge of Philadelphia communities a plus
