Program Officer, Global Strategies
Posted by John Templeton Foundation on October 30, 2017
Reporting to the Director of Philosophy and Theology, the Program Officer, Global Strategies is responsible for the management of the full life cycle of the grant process and the development of new funding initiatives in areas outside of the Western world. The position currently has a duration of three years (with the possibility of an extension or conversion to regular full time status). The Program Officer’s specific activities include the review of grant proposals, communicating with applicants and grantees regarding the application and review process, collaborating with our evaluation team to determine the impact of our grants, developing new projects to advance the mission and vision of the foundation, and representing the foundation at relevant meetings and conferences.
Areas of Responsibility
- Manage the life cycle of the grant process, including the Foundation’s relationship with principal investigators, for all initiatives that fall under the purview of their program area.
- Develop and manage strategic plans aimed at advancing the Foundation’s work in areas outside of the Western world.
- Participate in all aspects of the grant submission and grant review process.
- Develop projects in collaboration with heads of other Program Departments whose work advances the Foundation’s work outside of the Western world.
- Evaluate the performance of grants and grantees in conjunction with the Planning and Evaluation department.
- Participate in professional development opportunities.
Criteria & Relevant Skills
The ideal candidate for this role is highly organized, possesses superior writing skills, strong communication and analytical skills, and the ability to build relationships among scholars and practitioners in relevant fields. Experience in non-Western contexts is highly desirable. While the Global Strategies portfolio is broad, current areas of emphasis include Latin America and Islam in the Muslim majority context. Relevant experience in and language competency in one of more of these areas is desirable. Grants in the Global Strategies area common involve scholars and non-academic audiences engaging work in the areas of science and religion broadly construed. Given this range, there is no singular academic or professional background that qualifies one for work in this area, although the ability to work at the intersection of analytic philosophy, theology (especially constructive or moral theology), and the science is essential. While a candidate with a PhD is preferred, we will consider candidates with a Master’s degree who have demonstrated strong writing skills and experience in relevant settings such as schools.
