Professional Development Coordinator, Need In Deed

Since its founding in 1987, Need in Deed?s mission has been to work with students, teachers and community partners to prepare youth for civic responsibility and service to others. Our goal is to enable young people to become agents for change ? capable, contributing members of their community. We provide professional development services for teachers, giving them the skills and tools necessary for integrating service-learning with the academic curriculum. Our primary mechanism of delivery for this is the My Voice Teacher Network, a professional learning community comprised of current Network members and graduates (?Teacher Consultants?).

Job Description
Position: Professional Development Coordinator
Reports to: Professional Development Director

Overall responsibility: Support Teacher Consultants in implementing NID?s service-learning framework in their classrooms. Work with program staff to develop expanded professional development offerings and identify new fee-for-service opportunities.

Specific areas of responsibility:

? Broaden Teacher Consultants knowledge of service-learning theory and practice through a series of formal and informal professional development sessions;
? Provide technical assistance to Teacher Consultants conducting service-learning projects in Philadelphia public school classrooms, including connecting service-learning activities to the academic curriculum, and documenting projects;
? Direct and support Teacher Consultants in their roles as Network leaders and representatives;
? Maintain and update records on Teacher Consultant activities;
? Work with program staff to develop a continuum of professional development opportunities;
? Work with staff to identify fee-for-service professional development opportunities;
? Identify strategies for maintaining connection with teachers trained at fee-for-service workshops;
? Make recommendations for the future direction of the Teacher Network;
? Stay curr! ent with service learning literature and trends.

Desirable characteristics and areas of expertise:

? Experience training K-12 teachers, preferably in an urban setting;
? Experience teaching in public school classrooms, preferably in an urban setting;
? Experience conducting high quality service-learning projects with K-12 students, preferably in an urban setting;
? Excellent interpersonal skills (able to interact over phone, by email, and in person with various NID constituents, including teachers, students, administrators and community partners);
? Self-motivated (able to see tasks/projects through from start to finish; attention to detail is high priority);
? Organized (able to stay current with variable Teacher Network needs and maintain relevant records);
? Pro-active (able to anticipate tasks/needs and plan accordingly);
? Strong verbal communications and presentation skills (able to promote organization and its capabilities and to communicate essential information in timely matter to NID staff);
? Good written communications (able to compose basic letters, emails, documents and reports);
? Computer literate (familiarity with Macs, Word, Excel, Filemaker Pro, etc.);
? Desirable background could include: youth program development/management; knowledge of city?s human services/non-profit/ community networks/ professional learning communities;
? Master?s degree desirable.

Salary: high 40s (w/benefits), DOE.
