Post-Growth Economics & Community Resilience
Posted by on October 21, 2013
Because of your keen interest in the new economy movement, I’m sharing this just-released paper entitled “Climate After Growth: Why Environmentalists Must Embrace Post-Growth Economics & Community Resilience.”
http://www.postcarbon.org/report/1882095-climate-after-growth
In it, Rob Hopkins (founder of the Transition Movement) & I make the case that no meaningful climate policies will be enacted as long as our elected officials continue to prioritize economic growth above all else.
The new “inconvenient truth” is that the “new normals” of declining growth, depleting fossil fuels, and climate change require the environmental community to adjust our strategies. We must call out Washington’s (and Wall Street’s) outdated growth mania, and offer a sensible alternative: building community resilience.
The community resilience-building movement already exists and it is growing rapidly, creating new enterprises and meaningful work, and increasing well-being in towns and cities around the world. By making community resilience a top priority, environmentalists can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels, while addressing social and economic inequities and strengthening community cohesion.
I hope you take the time to review “Climate After Growth,” and share it with others.
All the best,
Asher Miller | Executive Director
