Policy Director, Prometheus Radio Project
Posted on: May 7, 2013

Job description
The Policy Director leads the organization’s policy agenda. Coordinating with attorneys, engineers, stations, and other allies, the Policy Director is responsible for proposing and winning policies that allow community radio to thrive. The Policy Director shares the vision of community controlled media with policymakers, press, allies, and the general public, communicating the policy changes needed to achieve that vision.

For this job, a commitment to our mission, strong communication skills, and comfort with learning the technical and legal aspects of radio regulation are crucial. We prioritize these qualities more highly than formal policy experience. If you believe in the value of communities owning their own media and you’re not afraid to dig into the wonky details, we want you to apply!

  • File comments on relevant proceedings at the FCC and at other agencies as needed
  • Monitor policy developments that can affect community radio and share them with staff and stations
  • Evaluate and advocate for proposals involving new technologies and their impacts on the community media field
  • Work with Communications Director to represent Prometheus in public and coordinate press on matters connected to policy
  • Maintain strong relationships with DC based policy coalitions and allies as well as relevant staff at FCC and in Congress
  • Maintain relationships with engineers, attorneys, journalists, academics and other experts who contribute their expertise to Prometheus
  • Work with station support staff to assess stations’ regulatory and policy needs
  • Commission and conduct academic studies as needed for the advancement of community radio
  • Develop popular articles and multimedia presentations on issues of interest to community radio
  • Participate in shared responsibilities related to organizational governance, professional development and collective learning

Required Qualifications

  • Commitment to the mission of Prometheus and media justice
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong research skills
  • Strong comfort with and willingness to learn technical and regulatory issues
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, board members, volunteers and interns
  • Must live or be willing to relocate to the Philadelphia area

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with policy advocacy
  • Familiarity with radio or telecommunications regulation
  • Background in community radio
  • Spanish language skills

Prometheus has a collective staff structure and all paid staff receive the same hourly rate of compensation. The position is based in Philadelphia, with regular travel to Washington DC.
