Philadelphia’s Office of Sustainability (OOS) is responsible for implementing Greenworks: A Vision for a Sustainable Philadelphia, the City’s comprehensive sustainability plan. OOS works with partners to improve quality of life in all Philadelphia neighborhoods, reduce the City’s carbon emissions, and prepare Philadelphia for a hotter, wetter future. The Energy Office, housed within OOS, manages municipal government energy operations.
OOS is working towards an office model in which staff members work interdependently while drawing upon the wide range of professional and lived experience among team members. Members often collaborate in workgroups of people with complementary skills to maximize OOS’ collective impact.
Job Description
The primary responsibilities of this position include coordinating and supporting activities related to the implementation of Greenworks: A Vision for a Sustainable Philadelphia. The position reports to the Deputy Director of Sustainability and works closely with multiple departments.
Second language proficiency preferred.
Essential Functions
Relationship Building
- Cultivate relationships among City of Philadelphia departments and external partners to advance the successful implementation of Greenworks visions.
- Represent OOS in various public forums and, as needed, present to stakeholders and interested groups.
- Consult resources to respond to information and data requests.
Project Coordination
- In partnership with the Deputy Director of Sustainability and other internal project managers, develop project strategy and a coordinated workplan to maintain project timelines and realize project deliverables.
- Facilitate communication between project team members to monitor the status of projects, including scheduling and leading meetings as well as creating and circulating status reports.
Research, Policy, and Data Analysis
- Provide research and policy analysis support to the Office of Sustainability and the Energy Office so that OOS achieves its strategic objectives. Examples of research areas may include, but not limited to: climate change, environmental justice, solar energy, and sustainable procurement practices.
- Research specific topics, issue areas, or trends from other cities to ensure OOS’s strategic initiatives align with emerging trends and best practices.
- Work closely with City of Philadelphia departments to gather quantitative and qualitative data on Greenworks progress.
- In partnership with City of Philadelphia departments, analyze reports on progress to discover actionable information that influence departmental decision-making in support of Greenworks visions.
- Help prepare program-specific materials including reports, briefings, presentations, and other communications to share the findings of issue-specific research and relate the potential implications on public policy.
Professional Development
- Create an annual personal professional development plan to develop or strengthen essential skills and seek opportunities for on-going learning.
General Support
- Performs other tasks and responsibilities as assigned. The focus of activities may change depending on the needs of the agency.
