Policing Project at New York University School of Law Seeks Camden, NJ Program Manager
The Policing Project at the New York University School of Law is a dynamic, growing organization dedicated to bringing democratic accountability to policing. We do cutting-edge work to bring the public’s voice to policing practices and policies. We work with communities and police departments across the country to ensure that police department policies and practices are transparent, efficacious, and adopted with public input. More information on the Policing Project can be found at our website, http://www.policingproject.org.
The Policing Project seeks a full-time Program Manager with interest and experience in education, criminal justice, and public policy, to lead its work in Camden, New Jersey. Our work in Camden began when the Camden County Police Department (CCPD) asked the Policing Project to solicit public input into their new body worn camera policy. Based on the project’s success, the CCPD retained the Policing Project to assist in fostering police-community engagement more broadly, and to design a youth outreach program. The Policing Project has launched projects related to policy transparency, officer training, and youth-police problem solving. These projects are in their infancy, and the program manager will have the exciting opportunity to contribute significantly to the design of cutting edge police-community engagement efforts.
The Program Manger will be responsible for:
• Implementing a year-long high school program that involves bringing students and officers together to talk with one another about policing, and ultimately to work together to identify and address an issue of mutual concern;
• Designing and overseeing a variety of projects that help bring community voice to CCPD’s policies and practices;
• Supervising and coordinating assignments and tasks for the Policing Project’s legal externs.
The Program Manager will most likely need to be based in the Camden, NJ or Philadelphia, PA area, but will travel regularly to New York to meet with the core Policing Project team. The Project Manager also may be asked to assist the Policing Project with other community engagement efforts around the country. (It is possible that this job could be done by someone resident in New York if willing to travel frequently to Camden.)
Desired Experience and Qualifications
• A demonstrated interest in criminal justice and teaching/curriculum design are encouraged to apply; J.D. and/or M.Ed., but other graduate degrees in social work or public policy a plus but not essential:
• Self-motivated, diligent, and able to meet deadlines while working with multiple stakeholders;
• Experience working closely with people from diverse backgrounds, and the desire to work daily with youth, community members, patrol officers, and police leaders in order to facilitate and improve police-community relationships;
• Strong research, writing, and communication skills.
