The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has been a visionary not-for-profit organization in the Greater Philadelphia Region since its founding in 1827. PHS organizes the annual Philadelphia International Flower Show, the world’s largest and longest-running indoor flower show, which brings 250,000 visitors and creates a $61 million economic impact to the city. PHS’s Philadelphia Green helps transform lives through revolutionary programs like City Harvest, which has grown and donated 64,300 lbs of fresh produce in three years—helping to feed 1,000 families each week of the growing season. PHS will also help lead Plant One Million, an ambitious program to plant one million trees in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Oversee, coordinate and advance PHSPlant One Million and TreeVitalize reforestation program activities primarily within Bucks, Delaware, Montgomery, and Chester counties, with some overlap into Philadelphia and the Plant One Million tri-state target area. Grow partnerships and resources within these areas. Coordinate with existing regional Tree Tenders and educational programs. Work with a diverse range of partners and stakeholders on the implementation of projects that demonstrate and promote Plant One Million and community forestry in the Greater Philadelphia region.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Oversee day-to-day management of specific tasks and initiatives to complete tree planting goals, and related projects, such as:

Direct and manage the work of hired landscape services contractors.
Administer Tree Vitalize Watersheds initiative, work with SE PA County Conservation Districts and their counterpart in Philadelphia.
Provide resources to advance tree planting and capacity in strategic locations to protect and improve water quality.
Identify and expand partnership opportunities which align with strategic direction and expand program throughout larger service area.
Serve as project manager for green infrastructure projects as assigned.
Coordinate with PHS education and urban forestry managers, oversee and manage operations and logistics for tree planting activities within targeted regional areas.
Conduct field investigations related to tree performance along streets, in parks, at stormwater management sites, and elsewhere.
Responsible for fee-for-service tree monitoring contract as assigned.
Manage grant-funded projects and contracts.
Complete project deliverables based upon contract requirements.
Provide reports and documentation of services.
Investigate grant opportunities and help prepare applications as requested.
Work with PHS program teams to advance organizational goals and objectives.
Collaboratively manage related programs and volunteers.
Perform other related duties as assigned including seasonal weekend tree plantings and occasional evening meetings.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED:

Experience with contractor supervision and landscape project implementation is highly desirable.
Solid experience in project management and proven ability to achieve project goals and objectives.
Effective communication and presentation skills.
Good organizational, networking and coordination skills.
Ability to work effectively with and relate to a wide range of people including business executives, non-governmental organizations, state and local government officials, community groups, elected and appointed officials and their support staff.
Ability to analyze problems and develop solutions, guide programs, and maintain schedules.
Ability to take direction, yet be a self-starter and work independently.
Maintains a good natured can-do attitude and enthusiasm for learning.
Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as well as knowledge of budgeting and financial administration.
ArcGIS and Adobe Creative Suite experience a plus.
Valid driver’s license and clean, safe driving record required.
College degree plus 3-5 years experience in related field desired.
Spanish language proficiency a plus.
Familiarity with SEPA county neighborhoods, State and Federal environmental programs, funding and policies, latest research, tools and technology in the fields of urban forestry, reforestation, riparian restoration, ecosystem management, a plus.
