Phoebus Criminal Justice Initiative
Posted by on December 11, 2011
The Phoebus Criminal Justice Initiative was created to support organizers whose work addresses police accountability, racially-biased sentencing policies, the growth of the for-profit prison industry, the criminalization of youth, the death penalty and much more.
The fund was established in the year 2000 as a unique partnership between the Phoebus Fund and Bread & Roses Community Fund. In addition to New Sanctuary Movement, there are 10 other current Phoebus Criminal Justice Initiative grantees including:
Human Rights Coalition, which empowers incarcerated individuals and families to end solitary confinement and increase accountability in the prison system.
Reconstruction, Inc., which leads crime prevention, anti-life sentence and youth crime campaigns in communities to better neighbor relationships and promote progressive activism.
Support Center for Prison Advocacy is campaigning to increase the number of the telephones available to people incarcerated in the Philadelphia Prison System as well as calling for alternatives to cash bail that will reduce pretrial incarceration.
The deadline to apply for funding in 2012 from the Phoebus Criminal Justice Initiative has been extended until December 20. If you do criminal justice reform work or you know an organization that does, please click here to learn how to submit a grant application before the deadline:
