Philly KEYSPOT: Digital Divide Hacks for the Tech Industry

Philly KEYSPOT is a network of 51 city-funded, public computing centers in low-income areas of Philadelphia, and a key city strategy for digital inclusion.

Each day, in neighborhoods from Point Breeze to Kensington, KEYSPOTs serve a diverse client-base including people experiencing homelessness, formerly incarcerated individuals, and the chronically unemployed.

This is an opportunity to gain a real and on-the-ground perspective of the challenges faced by these individuals, as well as stories of empowerment and long-term success.

KEYSPOT users and site coordinators will share struggles and issues related to technology, and participants will work in small groups to come up with smart ideas for technology-based solutions. The winning idea will be a project at Philly GiveCamp’s HackBack to produce a working product for social good. Refreshments will be provided!

Does the young person experiencing homelessness need an app that tells them what homeless shelters are open and the criteria for getting a bed? Does the chronically unemployed adult need an online mentor/job coach? Does a senior lacking computer access and skills need to know what trainings are provided when and at what KEYSPOT location? Is the mother with a family to feed in need of a mapping system to access food pantries in Philadelphia?

Let’s roll up our sleeves and bridge the digital divide in real time!
