Posted by Philly Counts on February 11, 2020
You are invited to the Philly Counts Misinformation Simulation Workshop facilitated by Data & Society, an independent non-profit research institute. This unique half-day series is designed to prepare journalists, city representatives and community leaders to effectively recognize and address the spread of misinformation about the 2020 Census through simulation-based training.
Date and Time: Friday, February 21, 9 AM to 1:30 PM
Location: The Innovation Lab in the Municipal Services Building, 1401 JFK Blvd., 16th Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19102
The day’s schedule includes:
- 9 AM to 10 AM: Census Champion training (for participants who have new to census action)
- 10:30 AM to 12 PM: Simulation workshop
- 12 PM to 1:30 PM: Networking – lunch provided
The 2020 Census is quickly approaching and comes with new challenges, including the threat of misinformation, particularly through the internet and social media.
Philly Counts is working to build trust with communities and spread accurate information about the census in order to ensure a complete and accurate count across our city. We’re actively responding to questions and concerns as they arise, but we can’t do it alone.
Your voice is essential to ensuring that every person in Philadelphia has access to clear and up-to-date information about the census so they understand that it is safe to complete, and the impact the results will have on the representation and funding for our city for the next ten years.
The simulation workshop will give participants the opportunity to practice decision making and strategic planning related to information management. Participants will be able to apply solutions to potential situations, and make adjustments according to outcomes. Participants will gain insight into why response and strategy to combat misinformation may vary in different stakeholder groups in our city, and how we can work together to ensure the integrity of the census information available online.
This event will remain off the record, so participants may be fully focused on engaging in the session’s activities. This workshop is an opportunity to collaborate with other stakeholders in the community to find the best solutions for managing the spread of census misinformation.
