Council on Foundations Launches Diverse Leadership Development Program
Deadline: May 13, 2010

In response to philanthropy’s growing commitment to inclusive practices and diversity in philanthropic decision-making, the Council on Foundations is launching the Career Pathways Program, a leadership development program aimed at recruiting and retaining diverse and excellent leadership in philanthropy’s most senior levels.

Through an intensive one-year networking and targeted skill-building program, Pathways seeks to prepare candidates from diverse backgrounds to successfully achieve positions in philanthropic leadership.

The candidates selected for the program will participate in three small-group learning sessions, each over the course of a couple of days, facilitated by expert faculty representing senior executives and trustees in the field of philanthropy as well as other fields. In addition to the in-person group gatherings, candidates will participate in self-directed career planning, one-on-one coaching, mentoring, and job shadowing opportunities.

For its inaugural class, Pathways will invite nine to twelve individuals who are working to attain senior-level positions in philanthropy. The program is open to individuals from diverse backgrounds with serious interest in pursuing executive and senior leadership positions in philanthropy. Applicants should be working in a grantmaking organization or foundation, have at least five to seven years of mid- to senior-level experience, and be on the cusp (i.e., within the next three years) of senior and executive-level positions in a philanthropic institution.

The program brochure and application instructions are available on the council’s Web site.
