Philadelphia’s Voices project

Get Healthy Philly is an initiative of the Philadelphia Department of Public Health that aims to: 1) decrease tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure, and 2) promote healthy eating and increased physical activity. Get Healthy Philly is partially funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Get Healthy Philly teamed up recently with the University of Pennsylvania for an exciting photo documentation project called Philadelphia’s Voices.
Twenty-eight Philadelphia adults and 20 Philadelphia youth were given cameras and asked to document their daily lives by taking photos of their tobacco and food environments.
Staff from the University of Pennsylvania interviewed the residents about their experience and how the environments they depicted influence the health and well being of youth.
“We appreciated the broad range of ideas shared by Philadelphia residents as part of this project,” said Carolyn Cannuscio, Assistant Professor of Family Medicine and Community Health, University of Pennsylvania.
“They used photography to tell candid stories about their health concerns, and to identify creative solutions to improving our city’s health,” she said.
Philadelphia Voices is now a traveling exhibit and online slide show of text and photos. Click these links to view the full online slideshow or visit http://www.smokefreephilly.org or http://www.foodfitphilly.org.
