Philadelphia unveils new plan for urban green spaces

Mayor Nutter unveiled a plan to make parkland available within a ten-minute walk of all city residents by 2015. The report that informed the plan was developed by the Penn Project for Civic Engagement through Penn Praxis following a series of meetings with hundreds of activists and citizens. The report calls for the redevelopment of 500 acres of space, transforming community gardens, converting abandoned lots into green space, and establishing recreational spaces to ease the stresses of urban life. The report found the areas least served by existing neighborhood parks were former industrial sections of West Philadelphia, North and South Philadelphia, and East and West Oak Lane. A large part of the plan includes the renovation of school playgrounds, introducing patches of grass and replacing concrete with surfaces that manage stormwater runoff.
