Springside Chestnut Hill Academy is proud to have been chosen as the host site for an intimate special-event screening that will double as a forum for constructive community dialogue. We invite parents, alumni, and the larger community to consider with us the film’s central question: how to rise above America’s toxic achievement fixation and build a richer, deeper, more empowering, and student-centered education culture from the ground up. The screening of this powerful film is free and open to the public.

In 2012, SCH showed Race to Nowhere in which filmmaker Vicki Abeles explored the culture of high achievement within her own family, her Bay Area community, and around the country. Raised to believe in the necessity and value of hard work, she watched her children implode under the weight of extracurricular demands and as many as six hours of nightly homework.

In Beyond Measure, Abeles offers viewers a positive picture of what is possible in American education when communities decide they are ready for change. With in-depth research, personal anecdotes, and a dose of common sense, it shows communities how to realize their collective power to change the system to better reflect our true values: health, happiness, and genuine learning for our children.

Notable figures featured in the film include Sir Ken Robinson (international education expert and presenter of the most watched TED talk of all time), Linda Darling-Hammond (education advisor for President Obama’s 2008 campaign), and bestselling author Daniel Pink (Drive and A Whole New Mind). The film team includes Oscar-winning editor Jeffrey Friedman (Common Threads) and Executive Producer Lynda Weinman, founder of
