Viewmasters: Mural Process, Product, and Context

Lincoln Financial Mural Arts Center at the Thomas Eakins House
1727-29 Mt. Vernon Street
Philadelphia, PA

Opening Reception: December 10, 2013, 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM
On View: December 10, 2013 – January 31, 2014

In developing Philadelphia Mural Arts @ 30, to be published by Temple University Press in March 2014, we tapped into the wealth of documentary images made by a number of photographers over the years, recognizing that, through their viewfinders, they saw far more than the mural image itself. For this exhibition, we selected three photographers with whom we have long and productive relationships: staff photographer Steve Weinik, Jack Ramsdale, who served as the primary photographer for the past two books published by Temple University Press, and Michael E. Reali whose involvement with murals can only be described as immersive. He is both a muralist and a photographer. These “viewmasters” are joined in this exhibition by Sujan Chitrakar who is in Philadelphia for a year as a Fulbright Fellow, and has spent months already documenting the people who paint murals, welcome them to their community, and create the imagery that is embedded in the murals.

Select work will be available for sale along with new Mural Arts Program merchandise created by youth artists. Light refreshments will be served.

The exhibition was organized by Thora Jacobson, Director of Design Review at Mural Arts.

Philadelphia Mural Arts @ 30 is made possible by the generous support of the Wyncote Foundation, the Independence Foundation, and an anonymous donor.
