Celebrating Philadelphia as a city of Readers,
Writers, and Thinkers!
Smith Memorial Playground
Fairmount Park
3500 Reservoir Drive, Philadelphia, PA 19121
World Literacy Day, National Literacy Day, International Literacy Day. Yes, people everywhere love to celebrate literacy. However, we in Philadelphia prefer to celebrate things our own way, which is why Tree House Books has launched Philadelphia Literacy Day!
In recent years, Philadelphians have joined hands to improve the literacy rates in our city. On May 13th, 2017, the Saturday before Mother’s Day, we will celebrate the strides we have made together. Tree House Books, with our families, supporters, partners, and book lovers from across the region, will honor Philadelphia as a community of Readers, Writers, and Thinkers!
Schedule of festivities

Join us for our signature event at Smith Memorial Playground from 11am –3pm, including:
Literacy Activities: From poetry walls to story time readings, there will be fun and creative activities for all ages that celebrate reading and writing through art, games, and more!
The Book Market: This massive flea market-like book-swap, will be open for all to drop off and select new books to kick start a summer of reading! Don’t want to swap? We will have book drop-off boxes around the event for families to tidy up their bookshelves and get in the spirit of giving. By donating new and gently-used books, guests will help us ensure that every child and family in Philadelphia has access to books in their home.
Food & Entertainment: Guests will enjoy caricature art, face painting, music, games, and more. Light refreshments will be available.
Free resources: Guests will be able to visit tables of our literacy partner organizations to find out about the programs they have to offer year round.
We look forward to seeing you!
