Philadelphia Economic Justice Toolkit Coordinator

The Campaign for Working Families seeks practical ways to improve the economic status of low income working people in Philadelphia. While CWF is a social service provider, we are interested in looking at the root causes of poverty in Philadelphia. With this frame, CWF recently initiated a coalition of activists, social service employees, faith based and higher education representatives and organizers to come together to fight for economic justice in Philadelphia. We have based our work around the participatory activities created by United for a Fair Economy (UFE) (http://www.faireconomy.org) to initiate fruitful discussions on the growing economic divide and the racial wealth gap in the US. Our vision is that with the spread of this model we can encourage more Philadelphians to get involved and take action for economic justice.

CWF and the Economic Justice Network in Philadelphia are hoping to spread this powerful model across Philadelphia through creating a “Philadelphia Economic Justice Toolkit.” We are looking for someone who is organized, creative, a self-starter and also passionate about economic justice to take responsibility for this project.

Specific tasks may include:
– Creation of the Philadelphia Economic Justice Toolkit
o Familiarize yourself with UFE resources and Popular Education Model
o Survey economic justice network for ideas
o Convene a group of toolkit supporters
o Work with UFE to create materials
o Create toolkit from start to finish
– Outreach for the Philadelphia Economic Justice Toolkit
o Plan and host a kick-off event for the publication
o Outreach to universities, non-profits and faith based organizations to spread the toolkit
o Create social media to spread information about the toolkit and ongoing communications network

The Campaign for Working Families is a member organization of the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition and works within a large network of diverse organizations throughout the city. This internship is a great opportunity to get to know some of these organizations and gain tangible and marketable experience and skills.

Availability: 12-20 hours/week beginning Fall 2010. Additional spring commitment preferred, but not mandatory. Flexible time and work environment: Mandatory weekly meeting, but work may be done independently.

Please send resume and letter of interest to Elly Porter-Webb, epwebb@gpuac.org
