Philadelphia Cares Day
Posted by on August 25, 2006
Over a decade ago, Philadelphia Cares Day, a service event with 500 volunteers and projects in nearly a dozen schools, began as a partnership between Philadelphia Cares and Philadelphia Public Schools. Though small in number, the spirited teams set a precedent in the importance of safeguarding our children and the places where they learn.
On October 21st, join Greater Philadelphia Cares, in partnership with the Philadelphia School District , as we host the 13th Annual Philadelphia Cares Day, a marathon day of service that gives our children attractive and more functional learning environments. More than 100 schools will benefit from fresh coats of paint, refurbished libraries, landscaped green spaces, restored playground equipment, and much more. As one of 15,000 volunteers committed to improving the quality of public education, you will help contribute 60,000 volunteer hours of service, accomplishing the equivalent of 29 people working full time for a year!
?We have no more valuable resource than our children. By improving the places where they learn, we are dramatically improving their chances for a brighter future,? said Greater Philadelphia Cares? President and CEO Lissa Hilsee.
This Volunteer-A-Thon raises critical funding for our year-round programs and events. Pledges will enable Greater Philadelphia Cares’ volunteers to expand the horizons and self-confidence of children by teaching them to read, rejuvenate neighborhoods ravaged by urban blight, and bridge the widening technology gap in underserved communities. In one day, you can make a world of difference.
The event will kick off with a spirited pep rally, registration, and free breakfast at the Mann Music Center at 8:30 am . Volunteers will then join their carpools or board SEPTA buses bound for their work sites. The day concludes with buses arriving back at the Mann at 2:30 pm for free food, music, and camaraderie!
The School District of Philadelphia (the nation?s seventh largest) is comprised of 273 schools dedicated to providing over 217,000 students with the path to a successful future. Education is the foundation of a great city and Philadelphia Cares Day offers an opportunity to lay the groundwork. You can help to ensure that these students have a brighter tomorrow by joining us on October 21st. Rally your friends, co-workers, neighbors, and family members to form a team, as we transform a day of service into a school-year full of fun and learning.
