City youth obesity rates drop
Rates of obesity and severe obesity among Philadelphia school children declined significantly between 2006 and 2010, according to a study conducted by the Philadelphia Department of Public Health and published in Preventing Chronic Disease, a journal of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The study, based on height and weight data collected by nurses in the School District of Philadelphia, revealed a 5 percent decline in obesity rates among children 5 to 18 years of age.
Significantly, the study also found an 8 percent decline in obesity rates among African American boys and a 7 percent decline among Hispanic girls.
